I find that when I speak about quinoa I encounter two kinds of people. One already knows that quinoa has all 9 essential amino acids required for human consumption. This group knows that quinoa isn’t a grain at all, but rather a close relative of spinach, beets and tumbleweed from the Chenopodium family. In other words, they're as informed as I am about the super food and ancient pseudo cereal called quinoa.
The second type of person I meet asks me, first, how to pronounce quinoa and, second, how to cook it. It's with this group's
keenness to learn how to eat better that I want to begin today.
This will be the first recipe blog along the Wise Bites way as we explore together how easy it is to improve what we eat. We're going to be exploring ways to prepare healthier meals that have more protein, iron and fibre, and also less calories then, say, mashed potatoes!
Our recipes are appropriate both for people on gluten-free diets and those who simply want to benefit from varying the grains in their diets.
Since Wise Bites is a Canadian Company, we like to support our Canadian Quinoa Farmers in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and we love
to sell their product. So let’s begin by talking about how easy it is to cook our Organic Canadian-grown Quinoa Pearls!
1 cup of quinoa pearls
1 1/2 cup of water,
Pinch of salt, optional
1 tsp. of canola oil, optional
Put the above ingredients into a pot and bring to a gentle boil with the
lid on for 8 to 10 minutes.
Remove the lid and leave on low temperature for 6 minutes to allow the remaining water to evaporate.
Serve as you would a bed of rice and top with your favourite fish or meat. Or if you prefer to keep it all vegetarian, serve topped with a
generous serving of all your favourite stir fry vegetables.
Our next recipe blog will tell you how to cook enough Canadian Quinoa Pearls for three quick and easy meals, three days in a row. We promise that at mealtime you won’t recognize it's all made from the same base of quinoa you prepared for day 1!
